UCF students watch documentary discuss development aid

March 14, 2016

On February 25, 2016, the Global Order Team Freiburg invited interested fellow students to an event on the topic of development aid. After watching a documentary on the issue, we had a long and very insightful discussion. With around 30 students present, some of whom have had first-hand experience as volunteer workers in developing countries, the discussion revolved around three main questions: What should be the aim of development aid, and to what extent can or should effective aid be reconciled with respect for local traditions? Should development aid target the poorest and most marginalized segements of a society, or rather the middle class with its potential to spur economic growth? And finally, how can conflicts of interest that stand in the way of effectively addressing the root causes of poverty and underdevelopment, be resolved in the multi-billion dollar development industry? We thank all participants for their active engagement with this exceedingly complex topic, and are confident that we all left the discussion with a more nuanced view of what development aid is about and where the pitfalls lie. For those of our followers who are likewise interested in the topic, we recommend the documentary "What are we doing here?" (watch it here) and invite you to reflect upon the above questions!

Your Global Order Project Team

November 30, 2015

The Global Order Project goes live in Freiburg. On Thursday, December 3, 2015, Team Freiburg hosts its first talk in a series to come. Under the title "Global (Dis)Order: Conflict - Migration - Capitulation?" Prof. Dr. Tim Krieger and PD Dr. Tim Epkenhans will each give a presentation followed by a discussion round an an invitation to a small reception afterwards.

With the talk series, we want to reach out to interested students and faculty in order to promote the project and offer an opportunity to engage with ideas, topics, and concepts of global order.

The event starts at 18:30 and takes place in the Theatersaal of the Alte Uni (UCF), Bertoldstraße 17, Freiburg.

For those of you from outside of Freiburg, UCF student currently abroad, or everybody who cannot come for any other reason, we will record the talks and have them available as videos on this website shortly after.
