Team Freiburg 2017-2018

The Global Order Team Freiburg is a group of students at the University College Freiburg (UCF). This year we plan on expanding the scope of our project to more interdisciplinary fields by organising talks, workshops and a conference with a primary focus on 'Security in the Global Order'.

Zakaria Al Shmaly

Zakaria is a Governance student in his second year at UCF. He has a background in humanitarian aid work in Syria, Turkey, and Iraq, as well as research experience in radicalization studies. His research interests are middle-eastern politics, intra-political dynamics of non-state actors, and EU foreign policy

Andrés Andrade

Andrés is a second year student of the Liberal Arts and Sciences program, majoring in Earth and Environmental Sciences. He is particularly interested in urban planning and innovative, sustainable solutions for the multiple challenges that cities nowadays face. He believes that the Global Order Project is the perfect platform not only to analyze and discuss these challenges but also to learn from different perspectives and come up with creative ideas in an interdisciplinary way.

Solveig Degen

Solveig is in her first year of Liberal Arts and Sciences at the UCF. She joined the Global Order Project as she believes that current political and social challenges need to be addressed on a global level and in an interdisciplinary way. She also believes that it is important to create platforms for exchange between professionals and young activists, which is one of the main objectives of the Project.

Carlotta Sallach

Starting her last year at UCF, Carlotta wanted to embark on a new ‘academic’ adventure outside the normal curriculum and joined the Global Order Project. Majoring in Governance, she has always been interested in the ways a (global) society functions or could/should function. In the last two years especially, her focus has been on International Relations and Conflict studies – two subjects for which the concept of security is of major importance. Being part of this years’ GOP Team, she is particularly looking forward to developing a better understanding of security as a concept in different disciplines as well as discussing the broad range of security challenges the world is facing today.

Judith Epremian

Judith is from Bonn and started studying Liberal Arts and Sciences at the UCF in 2017. To her, being part of the Global Order Project is a great opportunity to participate in engaging dialogues between experts and students and to help organise possibilities and platforms for discussion.

Tom is in his second years of Liberal Arts and Sciences at the UCF. Following his aspirations to understand not only the complex natural, but also social processes of our world, he chose the major Earth and Environmental Sciences. Major interests include climate security, ecosystem protection and sustainable solutions. In his first year as part of the Global Order Project, he is looking forward to the exchange between likeminded people, to learn more about collective action mechanisms on a global scale and tackle this year's challenge of organising a conference.

Jonas Skorzak

Jonas is currently in his second year of Liberal Arts and Sciences in the major Governance at the University College Freiburg. His interests include international relations, sociopolitical issues, and the intersection of culture and politics. At the Global Order Project, he is part of the external relations/outreach team and tasked with finding and contacting potential speakers and participants. Besides the Project, he also heads the Outreach Committee at UCF and is active at "Start With a Friend".

Efharis Karamasi
